At St Teresa's, we aim to equip pupils with the skills they will need to achieve their potential and be successful now and in the future. We recognise the importance of developing strong literacy skills as a lifelong learning tool and therefore strive to enable all children at St Teresa’s to become clear communicators and to achieve success as confident readers and writers. We aim for all our pupils to:
· read easily, fluently and with good understanding
· develop the habit of reading widely and often, for both pleasure and information
· acquire a wide vocabulary, an understanding of grammar and knowledge of linguistic conventions for reading, writing and spoken language
· appreciate our rich and varied literary heritage
· write clearly, accurately and coherently, adapting their language and style in and for a range of contexts, purposes and audiences
· use discussion in order to learn; they should be able to elaborate and explain clearly t their understanding and ideas
· be competent in the arts of speaking and listening, making formal presentations, demonstrating to others and participating in debate.
We achieve this through the use of a detailed planning kit, which clearly sets out learning objectives progressively and is linked to assessment documents, allowing the planning cycle to be meticulously followed and through quality first teaching.
